VFF: Union call for an amnesty on workers without visas as labour shortages hit home

Illegal farm workers are hiding the true extent of agriculture’s labour shortage, with increasing industry pressures forcing a culture of noncompliance, farmers say. It’s prompted the Victorian Farmers’ Federation to renew its call for an amnesty on illegal workers to clean up the system — a move backed by the National Union of Workers. Estimates put the worker shortage at up to 100,000, based on a forecast by the Australian Farm Institute from 2010.
