Reorienting animal agriculture in Australia

Australia is great at animal agriculture. Between our past history of ‘riding on the sheep’s back’ and being amongst the greatest beef exporters in the world, we know how to do it well. It’s noteworthy that we know how to do it well despite our challenging circumstances; particularly our relatively poor soils, tyrannical distances and difficult climate. However, tomorrow is going to be different and our successful history won’t ensure a successful future.

A thirst for certainty: irrigation in the Murray-Darling Basin

Farm Policy Journal – Winter 2019: Irrigated agriculture has been one of the most contentious issues of 2019. Calls for a Royal Commission into the management of the Murray-Darling Basin are an indication of just how high emotions have been running on this issue. While it is arguable that when no-one is happy it is probably close to the correct outcome, it is nevertheless disappointing that the policy settings which deliver certainty to all stakeholders do not seem to have emerged.

Research Report – Australian agriculture:
an increasingly risky business

Risk is ever-present in Australian agriculture and has often been the driver for innovation and change. However, the nature of the risks faced by farmers is constantly changing, and so the need to understand the tools available – and to ensure that the risk management marketplace matches the needs of farm businesses – is greater than ever. A rise in institutional risk and lack of a mature commercial risk market is a serious concern for the agricultural sector, even within the context of the continued resilience of Australian farmers.

The impacts of energy costs on the Australian agriculture sector

Data on the cost of energy to Australian agriculture is surprisingly sparse. The energy debate has thus occurred in an environment where there has been limited ability to estimate the sectoral and value chain impact of energy policy changes. This research compiled available data and estimated the cost of energy to agriculture and for sub-sectors and value chain components. The data has been built into the Energy Cost Calculator which can be used to model the impact of energy price changes on Australian agriculture.
